THE COMPATIBILITY COMMUNICATION SYSTEM , or CCS, gives people a way to see and share meaning. It is a unique system based around a set of image cards that provide people with a compact, easy and non-threatening way to uncover and talk about their lived experiences and thoughts - even tacit thoughts that they may not otherwise have discovered. The cards also give others a captivating way to listen to you and to truly understand what you are saying - listeners can literally SEE WHAT YOU MEAN.
Developed in Australia in 1999, the CCS has grown to become a tool of choice for professional facilitators, trainers, teachers, coaches, leaders, managers, parents and individuals in more than 70 countries worldwide.
The essential idea is that all participants have the same pack of cards (or fan or cards in the case of Express Fans) containing a specially selected set of photos, illustrations and words. A facilitator gives you a topic (or you can think of your own) and asks you to shuffle through your cards to find cards that best represent that topic for you. The images have no set meanings and any card can mean anything to anyone at anytime. All you have to do is pick the cards that best represent the topic for you. The you simply talk about why you chose the cards you chose.

Express Fans are ideal for session openers and icebreakers, group meet and greets, mid-session thought stimulators and session closers. If you already have CCS Facilitators Manual you will find it quite straightforward to adapt such activities from the CCS segments section.
Even if you don't have a CCS Facilitators Manual or you've never even used the CCS before, you can start enjoying the unique open, honest communication only the CCS can produce by following just a few easy steps:
1. Once everyone has their own Express Fan, begin by saying:
“Everyone has the same fan with the same set of specially selected photographs, illustrations and words. Any card can mean anything to anyone at any time – there are no set meanings for the images. So feel free to pick images that best represent [the topic] for you.”
2. Then ask one of the following topics (or make up your own with similar wording):
“Shuffle through your fan and find THREE cards that, for you, describe what an ideal weekend is for you.”
“Shuffle through your fan and find TWO cards that, for you, show how a best friend would describe you.”
“Shuffle through your fan and find TWO cards that, for you, describe the experience of being part of an excellent team.”
“Go through your fan and find ONE card that, for you, sums up a key leadership experience you have had.”
“Go through your fan and find TWO cards that, for you, describe what is most important in your life at the moment.”
“Shuffle through your fan and find ONE card that, for you, describes something about yourself that other people tend not to see.”
3. Ask people to share why they chose what they chose with one or more people.
